Laying a strong educational foundation requires time, patience, and dedicated leadership committed to effectively guiding students to become responsible adults. As a former teacher, principal, and current superintendent of the Harper Woods School District, Steven McGhee embodies these values. His leadership reflects a blend of his many skills and qualities, which are demonstrated consistently in his work.

A graduate of Alabama A&M University with dual majors in Printing, Production and Management, and Trade & Industrial Education, McGhee also earned two Master’s Degrees from Wayne State University and holds an Educational Specialist Certificate. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Administrative Leadership.

McGhee is passionate about serving children and families, continually striving to improve educational opportunities. Notably, in 2017, he became Harper Woods School District’s first African American superintendent and has worked to create innovative programs, including a career and technical education center focused on entrepreneurship.

Throughout his career, McGhee has led significant initiatives, such as redesigning schools into small learning communities, establishing mentoring programs, and revitalizing athletic departments. His efforts have earned him several honors, including the 2019 Men of Excellence Award and recognition as Educator of the Year by the Coleman A. Young Foundation.
