Beacon Elementary Annual Education Report

City of Harper Woods School District Beacon Elementary Annual Education Report

August 19, 2011

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for Beacon Elementary. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Janet Gottsleben, Beacon Principal, for assistance.

For 2010-2011, Beacon made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

Beacon Elementary is committed to meeting the academic, social and developmental needs of each student. We encourage our families to hold us to high standards and to join us in supporting the development of our students. I am happy to meet with you at any time so that together we can collaboratively continue to ensure Beacon Elementary remains an exceptional school.

Sincerely,
Janet Gottsleben
Principal, Beacon Elementary

The AER is available for you to PDF Documentreview electronically   or you may review a copy in the office at Beacon.

The staff and community of Beacon Elementary are committed to continuous improvement. Beginning with the 2011-012 school year, Beacon will offer the “Extended Day University” to qualifying students and enhanced enrichment programs for all students. These programs are designed to ensure that each student realizes, at minimum, a year of academic growth during the upcoming school year. We are excited about the positive impact these programs will have on the students of Beacon Elementary.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

  1. Harper Woods School District has a registration process which can be found on the school web site. Registration packets are available for parents to pick up at all buildings. The packets clearly list all the documentation parents must provide to enroll their child. Parents may drop off their completed registration packet at any of the buildings in the district.
  2. Beacon Elementary School has been an accredited school for over 20 years, first starting with North Central Accreditation and now with Advance Ed. Currently Beacon is working on 3 goals in the area of reading, math, and writing. Each year we assess the progress made towards these goals, and modify the school improvement plan as our data dictates to ensure student achievement continues to move in an upward trend.
  3. Harper Woods School District consists of 3 buildings, Beacon-K through 3rd, Tyrone-4 through 6th, and the Secondary Building, which houses both the Middle School, grades 7 & 8, and the High School, which serves grades 9-12.
  4. Parents can access the State GLCE’s for K through 8th grade on the website, www.hwschools.org.
  5. Beacon’s MEAP scores for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years are:
